I have been obsessed with makeup ever since I was about 4 years old. My first memories are that of watching my mother get ready for the day, or for an evening event. I would sit on the edge of the tub, and stare up at her, mesmerized. Watching her apply mascara was my favorite; seeing how that black stuff in that little black/gold Maybelline tube lengthened and enhanced her already long lashes was just incredible to me. I learned so much from just watching her. I couldn't wait till I was old enough to actually wear it outside of "Dress up" time. As one can imagine, Halloween was always my favorite (still is). My mother wasn’t the only influence in my career path.  My father, a former professor at Muskegon Community College, has his Doctorate in Philosophy and Theater. For almost 50 years he taught, directed plays and even began an Acting for T.V. and Film course. I had the privilege to be able to spend countless hours back stage in the dressing and green rooms, watching actors ready themselves with contour and over exaggerated lines. I asked questions and took it in like a sponge. In Jr. High and High School is where the idea of my becoming a makeup artist actually began. Friends and school mates would pay me to do their makeup in the bathroom at the beginning of the day or for dances and school pep-rallies.  I never really got involved in the Theater program at my school (which I deeply regret) but even being in Choir, talent shows and Cheerleading, the art of makeup was still ever present in my life as a performer. I still get a kick out of looking at my first "Portfolio"  (1997-1999) which showcases all the dances, performances and formals of other students and even a few faculty.

Besides the artistry she did through High School, working for the Estee Lauder Company in the retail cosmetic industry (Clinique & Lauder), gave her exposure to a variety of cosmetic textures and products to experiment with. After painting hundreds of faces from diverse backgrounds, she went to school for her Esthetics License and then on to receive training and certification in T.V & Film from prestigious Last Look Academy in Chicago. Drawing from her creative experiences and people skills, she takes pride in being able to say that she is almost entirely self taught. The Chrysallis Project

The Chrysalis Project is the photo-journalistic journey of Professional Makeup Artist, Heather Spataro, her weight loss over the course of one year and the documentation of her 10 year struggle with morbid obesity.

"I had no intention of anyone ever seeing these photos. I just wanted a reminder of where I had been and the journey I took to get where I am now. However, once I viewed the photos and saw how shocking the metamorphosis was I started sharing them with close family/ friends who were, in turn, inspired to take action for themselves. From there, my Chrysalis took on a life of its own. It gave me the courage to openly share my story empowering others to make a change. I want to share my experience and hopefully inspire others to take hold of their lives and invest in themselves. I want everyone to experience the happiness I have found" ~Heather
